Rebecca Miles, 30, thought she’d get married with a baby bump – but little Evelyn-Rose had other ideas…
Marriage wasn’t part of my plans – not again. Divorced with four kids and a job as a careworker, life was certainly busy enough.
But then, in September 2014, I met Ben, then 31, a friend of a friend. He was a bouncer and although he had a tough job, I could tell he was gentle and kind, so we swapped numbers.
Over a drink, I told him about my life with my children – Kyle, then 12, Connor, eight, Autumn, six, and Alexson, four. And he talked about working out at the gym and his love of comic books.
‘You’d get on well with Alexson, he loves superheroes too!’ I laughed. I could feel myself falling for him but we took things slowly until January 2015 when I introduced him to the kids. I smiled as Ben crouched down with the boys and started chatting. He was so good with them.
We knew we wanted to make a go of it and found a new house in our home town of Barry, South Wales, for us all to move to in March.
But just a few weeks later, I found myself throwing up after having a night out with a friend. It was totally unlike me – I’d only had a couple of drinks.
Confused, I took a pregnancy test and as the blue cross appeared, my mouth dropped open. I rushed into the bedroom to tell Ben and a huge grin spread across his face. ‘You’re amazing,’ he said, kissing me.
I was shocked but after a couple of days, the news sank in and I began to look forward to becoming a mum again.
The pregnancy went smoothly and Ben came to all the appointments with me. In August, I was delighted to find out I was expecting a little girl.
‘A little sister for Autumn,’I smiled.
A few weeks later, Ben and I were snuggling on the sofa. ‘You know what would make things even better than they are now? If we got married!‘
