TAKING THE LEAD: 'My animalistic instinct is more golden retriever'

Actress Amy Adams on motherhood and connecting to her wild side for a movie that should give us all paws for thought
- ADAM TANSWELL
TAKING THE LEAD: 'My animalistic instinct is more golden retriever'

She's played everything from a wide-eyed nurse (her 2002 breakout role in Steven Spielberg's Catch Me If You Can) to a fairy-tale princess (in 2007 live-action Disney movie Enchanted), but Amy Adams' latest film role is unlike anything she's done before. In comedy/horror Nightbitch, the six-time Oscar nominee - who has a daughter, Aviana, 14, with her husband of nine years, actor/director Darren Le Gallo - plays Mother, an artist who has pressed pause on her career to be a stay-at-home mum.

Seeking a new adventure in life, she encounters just that when her nightly routine takes a surreal turn and her maternal instincts manifest in canine form.

Amy, 50, speaking via Zoom to the international press about the dark comedy, opens up about raising a daughter and why she'd give anything to relive those “monotonous” yet magical days when she was little...

Amy, as a mother, how much did you relate to this role?

I identify deeply with this idea of monotony - though I have a different perspective now because [my daughter is] 14. It was great to get to go back and have the character discover this because the monotony becomes the memory, the thing that you take with you. You know, what I wouldn't give to sing my child a lullaby tonight. And then there's this reformation of identity, but that's not specific to parenting. It can happen in several stages of life - for women, especially. Whether it's puberty, motherhood or menopause, there are a lot of identity shifts. I love how this film shows the struggle, but also the deep love and joy. I started crying earlier when they were asking me about it. I was, like, “She [Amy's daughter] won't even let me read her a story any more.” No, she would, but it was great to get to go back and work with these toddlers and relive that moment. It made me miss it a lot.

Over the years, how have you changed as a mother?
