Sophie Turner had been keeping a low profile since confirming the end of her four-year marriage to Joe Jonas in a September 6 joint statement posted to Instagram. “There are many speculative narratives as to why,” it read in part. “But truly this is a united decision.” Not so fast.

Following a barrage of reports painting Turner in a negative light – “She likes to party,” a source told TMZ, “he likes to stay home” – her first public appearance spoke volumes, seemingly to be in defiance of what many have seen as a deliberate smear campaign. On September 19, she was snapped arm-in-arm with singer Taylor Swift, who dated Jonas in 2008 until he famously broke up with her during a 27-second phone call. “Taylor has a good time when she’s with Sophie and they enjoyed some fun girl time together,” a source told Entertainment Tonight of their outing at New York restaurant Via Carota. “Sophie doesn’t care that Taylor dated Joe.”

Fans sure do care. A photo of Swift deep in conversation with Turner at the table went viral. “She’s listening so intently while Sophie was giving her the tea,” account Taylor Throwbacks captioned the pic. “Lyrics flying through her brain like Rain Man,” quipped one social media user.
