BUILD THY WORLD

Finding the romance in a murder mystery with Rashomon-esque approach is the kind of story that filmmaker Sujoy Ghosh likes to tell. Case in point: Jaane Jaan

BUILD THY WORLD

GRAZIA: Taking on the adaptation of any book, especially a Keigo Higashino story, can be tricky. What is it about this one that convinced you of its viability on screen?

SUJOY GHOSH: It was an instinct. When you see someone wearing something that you want for yourself? When I read this book, that’s how I felt. I wanted the story and these characters for myself and I think this was one way I could have them. When I was given the book, I was under the assumption this is a mystery. While reading it, I saw a love story. That just stayed with me and I thought, this is the most beautiful thing about this book: It’s like Rashomon, where everyone sees a different story. That’s what got me greedy to adapt it – so that people can see what I saw. In Kahaani, I attempted something like this with Rana and Vidya.
