GRAZIA: What led you to this story? 
RICHIE MEHTA: I was directing a documentary in 2015 titled India In a Day (backed by Google), in which people all over India were meant to shoot footage of their own lives on their phones on&nbsp;one particular day, October 10, send it to me, and I would assemble it into a feature-length documentary that profiles a day in the life of the country. One of the pieces of footage I received was of an ivory raid in Delhi. I was confused: Did this happen today? I called the Wildlife Trust of India and they told me that the Kerala Forest Department (supported by other groups, including WTI) executed the largest ivory bust in Indian history in Delhi, on that day, after a year-long investigation into the biggest wildlife smuggling ring in the country, and figured they would send me this footage, since it was my shoot day.&nbsp;I was flabbergasted. I always loved elephants, and cared deeply for wildlife conservation, but from afar. I knew that Google would never let me show this as it was a crime scene. I told the person at WTI that I couldn't use this footage for this documentary, but if she gave me a few years, I would come back and try to understand the entire case, the&nbsp;issues it addresses, and do a full piece on it. Poacher is the result.
G: When it comes to deciding what stories to tell, what is your process of selection? 
RM: What my instinct tells me to pursue, and what my ethics at some point demand that I pursue.
G: What were your biggest challenges in telling the story of Poacher? 
RM: The challenges were multi-faceted. I was shooting in a language and industry I was unfamiliar with, shooting in an environment (the jungle) I had never understood before, and from a narrative perspective, convincing the world through the story why it matters.
G: What is it that you feel people need to be more aware of when it comes to laws regarding wildlife? 
RM: I believe that the laws are fantastic in India and are constantly evolving of course, as all laws do. But enforcing these laws all the time, and in all regions, can be challenging.&nbsp;What I want to showcase is how the frontline staff - I call them planetary health workers - sacrifice so much to enforce those laws on behalf of the voiceless.
G: As a filmmaker, what are non-negotiables for you when you're taking up a project? 
RM: If it's a story inspired by real life, and I've researched it,&nbsp;I've often made promises to the real subjects. And those promises are non-negotiable.&nbsp;I hold them as sacred, and if ever I would be forced to break any of them, I would leave the project. All my partners and collaborators are made aware of them early on, and all major decisions around the project are rooted in them.
G: Delbi Crime changed the landscape of docuseries for India. How has it changed your life? 
RM: It made it easier to get Poacher financed (by QC entertainment) and it gave me creative credibility when I entered a room to meet new collaborators. It also reaffirmed my desire to tell stories inspired by reality.
G: What is the trickiest part of making a docuseries, where there's dramatisation and reality coming together? 
RM: It's a balance of what truly happened, and how to essentially 'package' that reality into something that makes sense narratively. In the case of Poacher, much of the reality unfolded in such a dramatic and chronological way that that wasn't really the challenge. The challenge was to show how motivated these wildlife crime fighters are in their chase to save a species, and the world around them, and why this is important to every single one of us.
