This Breast Cancer Awareness month, a look at the organizations and people who are committed to raise awareness and inspire hope

A HEARTFELT CAUSE

In the Philippines, as well as globally, breast cancer remains as the most prevalent and deadliest type of cancer for women as per the World Health Organization (WHO). Statistically, three in 100 Filipino women would be diagnosed with this medical condition in their lifetime. In our country, this situation is exacerbated by lower screening rates, resulting in about 65% of cases being diagnosed at an already advanced stage, according to Dr. Corazon Ngelangel, President of the Philippine Cancer Society.

Regular screening is a must. Early detection is a crucial factor in achieving better patient outcomes. Prioritizing one’s breast health through tests like clinical breast exams, mammograms and even monthly self-checks can go a long way in addressing issues early, should they arise.

Thankfully, scientific advancements in screening and treatment coupled with support have taken the five-year relative survival rate for early-stage and localized breast cancer to 99%.

And while the fight against breast cancer is an ongoing and year-long commitment, this October, supporters of the cause are set to rally together for Breast Cancer Awareness month.
