TWO YEARS AGO, in 2022, scientists found microplastics in freshly fallen Antarctica snow. They found an average of 29 particles per litre of melted snow, with polyethylene terephthalate (PET) being the most prevalent. It is commonly used in soft drink bottles and clothing.
Antarctica is one of the most desolate places in the world, almost devoid of humans. Despite this, the plastic scourge has crept there, silently polluting the environment and the thousands of marine species that call it home.
Some would say it’s inevitable. I strongly disagree with that. While we may have left the door open, it is not too late to adapt our behaviour and keep it closed so the generations after us can still enjoy a beautiful world. Rolex, for example, is certainly doing its part.
In 2019, the brand launched the Perpetual Planet Initiative, a cleverly named movement that supports individuals and organisations in keeping the door closed and allowing balance to return to our ecosystems. Today, the Initiative has a portfolio of over 20 partnerships all around the globe.
One such partnership close to home involves the Balinese island Nusa Penida. The turquoise waters and lush greenery make this a stunning location, no matter where you point your camera. Additionally, it is a popular diving spot and home to manta rays, sunfish, and turtles. Unfortunately, like Antarctica, the island is also suffering from the effects of pollution and climate change.
