For more than four decades, Dreamworld has promised to give its many visitors “happy memories that last a lifetime”. However, these days, the Gold Coast theme park is more remembered for its string of negative headlines, the latest of which involved one veteran animal handler being savagely attacked.
Melissa Reynolds, 47, was reportedly walking a five-year-old tiger on the morning of September 2, when she was mauled, suffering “deep lacerations to her arm and puncture wounds”.
She was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital for treatment. At the time of going to print, Melissa remains in hospital and in a stable condition.
A spokesperson for Dreamworld labelled the incident as “isolated and rare”. Yet the attack has prompted new calls for legislative and safety changes to protect handlers, the public and the beloved big cats.
