THE game of football has changed enormously over recent times and in the main that has been for the good of the industry and the football authorities.
However, not all of these changes have given rise to improvements in the football match from a spectators’ perspective.
Apart from judging a game on the result, fans have always appreciated a game which is end to end, full of goals and chances, and played in the right spirit.
I feel that things have changed and the game is now about possession, defending and gamesmanship, all of which are contrary to the wants of the majority of the game’s supporters.
I appreciate that Premier League clubs do not need gate receipts to be profitable but in the lower leagues clubs need to have an attractive product to increase match attendances and therefore remain financially viable.
Quality of product is also vital to the media industry to ensure it gets a return on its enormous investment in football across the globe.
I believe that the desires of supporters should be uppermost in the authorities’ minds when looking to improve our game.
