Experts think the same coloured bacteria could be found on faraway planets that circle dim red stars smaller than the Sun.Most telescopes are currently trained to look for green pigments as a sign of life in deep space.Now stargazers plan to expand them to search for the colour purple too.Study co-author Lisa Kaltenegger, of Cornell University in New York, said the move is designed to "create a database for signs of life to make sure our telescopes don't miss life if it happens not to look exactly like what we encounter around us every day".She added: "Purple bacteria can survive and thrive under such a variety of conditions that it is easy to imagine that on many different worlds."Purple may just be the new green."
