Lynn Walford demonstrates how pattern in all its many styles and forms – from wallpaper to intricate embroidery and tapestry – can bring a unique look to a 16th-century home

PROFUSION of pattern

The sitting room is vibrant with colour and pattern, from the bucolic scenes on the toile de Jouy screen to the intricate woven design of the oriental carpet. The screen was sourced from dealer Su Mason, @sumasonlondon, while the sofa, bought in the 1970s, has undergone several reincarnations, most recently this purple velvet from The Conran Shop. Lynn made the cushion covers from 1930s velvet curtains. The walls are painted in Yellow-Pink by Little Greene.

The Georgian façade, painted in Farrow & Ball’s Wimborne White, is a perfect backdrop for Madame Alfred Carrière climbing roses.

Antiques such as the sofa table, circular corner table and mahogany tallboy – known as Grandpa Goodman because it was made as a wedding present for a Goodman relative and passed down the generations to John – are mixed with contemporary pieces, giving the sitting room a pleasantly informal look.

ABOVE The Georgian fire surround and the Delft tiles so often found in period Suffolk houses are original. Lynn chose Little Greene’s Yellow-Pink wall paint to match the yellow silk trim on the framed pair of Chinese army armbands hanging either side of the fireplace. BELOW The entrance hall extends towards French windows opening into the garden at the back of the house. A Georgian hall table and oriental rugs establish the traditional look, while the contemporary painting by local artist Frank Beanland, an over-the-top vintage fringed lampshade, and the glazed ceramic jug add individual style.
