“"Speak up, because the day you don't speak up for the things that matter to you will be the day your freedom truly ends”
How many of us have to withhold a different point of view, how many have chosen not to confront a person when things go wrong, how many of have not taken a stand, how many of us have been in the silence zone just to avoid argument?
Last week, my colleague messaged me at midnight and shared the challenges faced by her while managing work and personal life. When I spoke to her, I realised that she had so much pent up inside her, but had held back her tongue for years. I recommended to her that she speak up, be firm, share her concern and solve the problem. And to my surprise, her answer was, "I don't want to hurt anyone, I have accepted my roller-coaster life and I believe I should live this way." This for me was a soul-crusher. In her book, Nice Girls Don't Get the Corner Office, Lois P.Frankel writes that one of the mistakes that women make at the work place is "holding their tongue." Women will avoid saying things that should be said in a legitimate manner. Holding your tongue only serves to make you feel frustrated and appear less willing than you really are to speak up for what you believe in.
