Smart Grids and Smart Cities require considerable investments in terms of manpower, skill development and standards as they are key enablers for more efficient management of energy, says R Srinivasan.
The ever-increasing need for energy in view of challenges such as the need to control transmission losses and power theft, while operating one of the largest electricity grids in the world, led to the nation deciding to launch ambitious missions to establish smart grids and smart cities. A smart grid informs and educates customers about their energy usage, costs and alternative options to enable them to make decisions about how and when to use electricity (time-of-day metering) and it provides safe and reliable integration of renewable energy resources. So, it is the heart of a smart city and smart cities depend on a smart grid to ensure delivery of electricity. Smart grids are the corner-stone of some of the government’s programmes such as 100 Smart Cities, the ambitious renewable energy target, electric vehicles and Power for All. In this context, Swedish Minister for Energy and Policy Coordination, Ibrahim Baylan, while on a recent visit to India reportedly said that India’s ambitions of boosting solar and wind power generation will face a transmission challenge, which can be overcome by developing a smart grid, which he said is just as important as boosting renewable energy generation.
Queried about the smart grids scenario, with an update of state-wise projects, and how the ‘Make in India’ slogan plays out for the smart grids sector, an India Power spokesperson said, “The Ministry of Power has allocated 14 smart grid pilot projects that will be implemented by various state-owned distribution utilities in India. The following are an update of these pilot projects:
1 Assam Power Distribution Company Ltd, Assam Project status: The project has been awarded to Phoenix IT Solutions. Work has been approved and preparation of design and documents has been sent to the MoP.
2 Uttar Gujarat Vij Company Ltd, Gujarat Project status: UGVCL stated that scope of the pilot area is confined to Naroda only.
