At the very start of her career, ten years ago now, Ruth Wilson would spend the night before interviews ‘prepping’ her answers. ‘Because I was so nervous,’ she recalls, cringing a little at the memory. Having graduated from drama school only six months previously, the then 24-year-old actress suddenly found herself in the spotlight when, to much fanfare, she was cast in the title role of the BBC’s big budget 2006 adaptation of Jane Eyre. ‘I remember we were halfway through shooting and only then did I get my head round how big this would be for me, and I was really scared.’ Prior to that, her professional experience had been limited to a stint in Channel 5’s Suburban Shootout, a fast-forgotten comedy that also starred a young Tom Hiddleston as Ruth’s love interest.
