Meet Camila Cabello, the most famous musician in the world right now – and possibly one of the most driven
3pm on a Tuesday afternoon and I’m sitting in the glass-fronted reception of Camila Cabello’s publicist’s office. Cabello is in the middle of a whirlwind publicity tour in London and is running late. But these things happen. In the past 72 hours, the singer has ticked off one Cosmopolitan cover shoot, a Radio 1 interview with Nick Grimshaw, performed on Dancing On Ice, done a street-style shoot outside this very office and at least six different TV interviews.
Ten minutes later, one of her team appears. “Camila is ready for you now,” she smiles.
I’m ushered into a meeting room, in which a long boardroom-style table cuts down the middle. It’s the sort of thing one expects to find Donald Trump sitting at the end of, not a teeny doll of a woman whose long brown fringe hangs over her face like a pair of manor-house drapes.
An older woman sits protectively by her side as the young woman studiously flicks through a magazine, folding the corners of the pages every so often. This is Camila Cabello – right now the biggest pop star in the world, flanked, as it turns out, by her mum.
“Hi,” she waves at me while her mother smiles, and then silently slips out. She tells me she’s tired. I tell her I’m tired, too, as I flew in from LA last night. We both laugh. “I’m just looking for outfits I like,” she smiles, continuing to leaf through her magazine.
