You know the designers, you know what they do, but cementing a brand as a fashion authority is never a one-menshow. Whether they’re making the garments or making the brand, we’re putting these behind-thescenes heroes front and centre.
MOTO GUO (@MOTOGUO)
For the longest time, it seemed like local fashion had been templated and originality was criminal. Then came Moto Guo, a self-proclaimed skeptic who stuck out like a sore thumb; an eccentricity that somehow works wonders for him, out of nowhere bringing his quirky conceptions with a hint of self-deprecating wit forward. Fashion’s sense of humour that was thought to be lost found its way back into Moto’s graduation project in 2013 which had the media turning their heads. Two years later, after crossing paths with an enthusiastic business mind, Moto Guo saw the light of day.
“I am grateful for everything that I have accomplished today and I couldn’t have done it without every single one of my teammates. Everyone in this team plays a major role in the company, and we work cohesively and tirelessly to bring the brand to the next levels. I guess the thing that firmly glues us together is the motivation and the passion for what we do. But most importantly, we get along well with each other,” said Moto.
Maybe to have a team that clicks truly is a must, aside from innovative offerings. After all, Moto has achieved the unthinkable in just two years; the more memorable feat was rather obvious — being hand-picked as a semi-finalist for the 2016 LVMH Prize for young fashion designers, a first for a Malaysian. Even at the time this interview was conducted, Moto and his team were working around the clock for another mad cap spectacular for London Fashion Week Men’s Spring/Summer 2018.
