Sunny Smiles

Vera El-Timany
Sunny Smiles

They say when the sun smiles, we do too. The glistening light, the warmness that touches our faces, the tingle in our hearts—it’s all connected. Yet, the authenticity of such a statement tends to be questioned more often than not. Is it truly what impacts our day, or in other words, what determines the mood of each day? Or, is this in a sense a myth, an ideology programmed and imbedded into our minds by society? There is a stigmatism that eludes from darkness and an over whelming feeling of peace and calmness that is affiliated with light. So, is this conception really a deception? Have we been fooled by general associations of such two contrasts? If we analyze this it becomes apparent how we naturally make these connections; engaging in habit. In pictures where a sun is drawn is normally considered joyful, yet drawn clouds of darkness are considered dreadful. In songs referencing the sun, is crediting happiness, yet songs discussing storms are dictating sadness. In movies the protagonist is usually dressed in light colors, yet the antagonist is dressed in dim colours. It is a psychological trigger that has been engraved from birth. Why though? What has brewed up this perception to begin with? These interpretations are not entertained from nothing—it is a true belief; it is nature’s greatest medicine. The sun doesn’t cease to rise, but neither to set. Ultimately, we create our own ‘sunshine’.

UNTTLD (Simon Belanger)

UNTTLD (Simon Belanger)

Luxurious, domineering, and vibrant – three words that solidly define UNTTLD’s incredible showcase of their F/W 2018 collection at Toronto Fashion Week. Adorned with black headdresses (or hats), the models that graced Yorkville Village’s runway flaunted boldcoloured velvet dresses and boss-lady outfits. Since 2011, designer duo Simon Belanger and Jose Manuel Jacques have been creating lux pieces that reflect on masculine feminity to emphasize the capabilities and desires of the modern woman. We had the opportunity to speak to Simon shortly after the show about their one-of-a-kind collection that is truly one to reminisce.
