It’s hard to imagine, but your baby will receive their very first test only seconds after they’re born. This test, known as the APGAR, is given to every new born across the world to evaluate their immediate needs and physical condition
First developed in 1952 by an anaesthesiologist named Virginia Apgar, the test has since used her surname as an acronym for the five important characteristics that every doctor wants to see in a newborn baby: Appearance, Pulse, Grimace, Activity and Respiration. The APGAR is done twice, one minute after birth and again five minutes after birth, and it is possible that a baby may have two different scores from each APGAR test. It quickly points to any challenges that the baby may face and whether or not they need extra medical intervention.
