Ever wondered about strength training and what it really is?
Fret not, for we have the answers. If one were to go with official definitions according to a medical dictionary, strength training is a method of improving muscular strength by gradually increasing the ability to resist force through the use of free weights, machines, or the person’s own body weight. Strength training sessions are designed to impose increasingly greater resistance, which, in turn, stimulates development of muscle strength to meet the added demand. However, that’s the official definition. Here’s what you need to know. Strength training is a language. You use this language to speak to your body through physical exercise. It uses resistance to induce muscular contraction which, in turn, builds endurance, strength and the size of your muscles. Weight training is a type of strength training. While talking to your body, simply keep this principle in mind: your body is a magnificent machine which responds to its environment to best adapt and, in return, to survive. It will respond to its challenges by adapting accordingly. Hence, if we can control the challenges, we can control its response.
Use this method and over time you will realize how handy it can be to get a toned and healthy body. Start by communicating with your body, in real terms. Here is an example:
YOU: Body, you have to sit still on this desk and can’t move much all day. There’s work to be done.
BODY: All right but I need energy to do so, therefore feed me.
YOU: Fair enough, here’s a cookie and some chai/samsosa/diet coke.
