Shubh Muhurat

Marriage is a sacred institution and it should not be broken during a couple’s lifetime.

Three important decisions make a wedding successful and everlasting: the right person, the right date and the right time. The Hindu Vedic scriptures place great emphasis on astromancy for marriage ceremonies. For the same, astrologers are consulted to assign a suitable date and time for marriages. Shubh Muhurats are considered to be auspicious time-slots that make sure that a couple gets married at the most propitious time. It is determined by considering all the possible events that are important an a person’s lifetime. There is no stringent formula to calculate Shubh Muhurat for marriage rituals. Even Hindu intellectuals have had differing viewpoints on some of the elements for selecting auspicious marriage dates. This means that one has to be extremely careful when calculating and analysing different opinions while deciding an auspicious date and time for marriage. Not everyone can do such rigorous calculations. One needs to be practical while determining Shubh Muhurat and should keep the most significant elements in mind.

What is Shubh Muhurat?

Muhurat is a unit of measuring time according to the Hindu calendar. In 24 hours there are a total of 30 Muhurats. These are then classified as auspicious or inauspicious Muhurats. The first Muhurat period starts at sunrise for a given location. An auspicious day is assessed on the basis of Shubh Vaar, Shubh Nakshatra, Shubh Tithi etc. Then, a favourable time period is evaluated which is defined as ‘Shubh Muhurat’. It is the ideal time period when an opportune event must be conducted to ensure a buoyant, fortunate and hassle-free affair.
