When The Block NZ: Firehouse stars Stacy Heyman and Adam Middleton got engaged in a romantic hilltop proposal last year, it was well overdue. Twice, Adam had watched his proposal plans crumble thanks to COVID-19 and a sudden surgery, but the right time finally arrived in October at Wellington’s picturesque Palliser Bay, where an overjoyed Stacy said yes!
“Originally, I was planning to do it in Queenstown in early 2020, then the first major lockdown happened and put a stop to that,” says Adam, 27. “Then Boki, our Samoyed dog, underwent a full hip replacement halfway through the year, so Stacy and I were housebound for a good few months during her recovery. Again, we couldn’t get away so I could pop the question.”
In the middle of two-bedroom renovations at their Wellington home, Stacy, 27, booked a weekend getaway to their favourite luxury lodge, Wharekauhau, in the Wairarapa.
“Our house was turned upside down at the time, with all the bedroom furniture in the living room and bathroom,” recalls Adam, who works as an art director for Weta Workshop. “As you can imagine, we were keen for a long weekend away, so Stacy had been emailing the staff to book us on a 4WD quad-biking tour, which we’d done before and absolutely fell in love with because of the scenery.”
Unbeknown to Stacy, Adam removed her from the email conversation and began organising a special mid adventure proposal. He arranged for a platter and bottle of Champagne to be delivered to a spot overlooking beautiful farmland, where he surprised her with a custom-made ring from The Village Goldsmith.
